Our ward has a lot of Enrichment Groups, so here's the whole list to try to help everyone see all the options and who to contact if you're interested in joining a group. There is an open invitation for all of these Enrichment Groups.

Everyone Has A Story - Marjorie Harward
This class is a fun way to write your personal history. Each month they write about a different topic and meet to share stories.

Craft Group - Jalyn Bringhurst
This group is a fun way to get together just for fun to make things. They meet once every other month.

Playgroup - Caroline Shillig
This group is a great way to meet the little ones in the ward and their mommies. Caroline does a great job planning fun activities for the kids and the parents can't help but enjoy as well.

Quilt Group - Claudine Snyder
Learn to quilt from the pros. Right now they're working on a table runner. They can also help you with a project you are working on.

Sewing Basics - Jennie LeFevre
Again, learn from the pros. There are tons of tutorials online these days, but none of them are as good as one of these sewing basics classes. So far they've made pillow cases and hemmed pants.

Quiet Book Class - Kathy Snyder
I hope this will help Nigel learn to be reverent! The book is darling and full of activities for situations like sacrament meetings.

Cooking 101 - Meredith Harris
Share recipes, learn the basics of cooking, how to feed a family. It's a great class.

Our last Enrichment activity was a great bread making class. We had a class on how to make a special recipe for bread that you can use for 50 or more different breads: pizza dough, cinnamon rolls, etc.

Canning Butter Correction

Margie Harward just let me know about the most recent information about canning butter. She said this:

I received a food safety bulletin from the extension service--Utah State University. It says that the method to can butter at home has not been developed and may potentially lead to botulism or other food borne illnesses if they are stored at room temperature. Information can be found on the website http://extension.usu.edu/utah. You can also consult the USU Food Safety Program website at: http://foodsafety,usu.edu.

They changed the method of canning tomatoes a few years ago also. I guess they are always finding new information about ways to keep us safe.

So I guess I'm in the market for a cow again :)

If you're like me you've been trying to figure out how to fit a cow on your shelf for food storage. I LOVE butter, ice cream, milk, sour cream, cheese, cream cheese, and anything else you can think of that comes from a cow.

One of my favorite ingredients really is butter, which is why I'm excited to share with you HOW TO CAN BUTTER. This came from a ward recipe book that Micah's mother, Olivia Anderson, gave me for my birthday about 5 years ago. I can't believe it took me this long to learn how to can my cow!

Here's how...

Use only the highest quality butter. Heat jelly jars in 250 degree oven for 20 minutes without rings or seals. While jars heat, melt butter slowly until it comes to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 5 minutes. Pour melted butter carefully into heated jars being careful not to get any butter on rim of jars.

Add lid and rings and close securely, they will seal as they cool. Shake jars a few times during cooling to prevent separation although this step is optional. Put into refrigerator or other cool place until butter hardens. After hardening, butter will store on shelf for 3 years.

Quiet Book Class meets for the first time tonight!

We will meet on the stage at the church. Kathy Snyder is the teacher and will be going over the basics of making a quiet book and then we will start making a page.

For this class please bring:

fabric markers,
fabric paint or fabric crayons (Kathy doesn't recommend fabric crayons as a matter of preference.) Just bring one type not all three.

You can purchase markers, paint or crayons from a craft or fabric store.

Velcro from a fabric store. (Cotton Shop has it 40% off right now - you will need more than 1/2 yard for a quiet book if you want to buy more)

There will not be a nursery provided for this class so please make other arrangements for your little ones.

Tonight we have the special privilege of having a mother-daughter team give us a bread making demonstration. They have one recipe that you can finish from start to finish in only ONE HOUR!

The other great part about this recipe is that you can use it for more than 50 different types of breads: cinnamon rolls, pizza dough, etc.

And yet another great part about this recipe is that instead of using oil it calls for an ingredient that has a much longer shelf life than oil so this can be a pretty reliable food storage recipe.

Quarterly Enrichment Activity

March 18th will be our next activity. Of course there will be a delicious dinner served at 6:00, then from 7:00 - 9:00 PM there will be a bread making demonstration, all the while a children's class will be provided.

This is not your typical "bread making demonstration".

This mother/daughter team is in high demand and we lucked out! The 9th ward had scheduled the demonstration a year in advance, but ended up not being able to make the date work, so they offered their reservation to our ward!

Here are some cool facts about the evening:

Learn how to make bread from start to finish in 1 hour.
Use 1 recipe for more than 50 dishes (bread, pizza dough, cinnamon rolls...).
Their recipe uses an alternative ingredient to oil that has a longer shelf life than oil, so it's food storage friendly!
Sample some of the 50 delicious recipes that night!

We need a head count so the people giving the demonstration will know how many mouths to be ready to WOW. Please RSVP in the Relief Society binders on Sunday, or directly to Tammy Strunk, our Enrichment Counselor.

Ward Temple Night is tonight! Please be in the Temple Chapel at 6:00 PM to attend the 6:20 session as a ward. You may care to read or listen to Elder L. Lionel Kendrick Of the Seventy's talk entitled Enhancing Our Temple Experience to help mentally prepare for service and worship in the temple. He gave the talk in April 2001 at General Conference.

Reminder and update about Dance Practice

Our first "dance" practice is tonight for the ward film.
We're meeting at 7:00 PM as opposed to 8:00 PM because the young men and young women are not having mutual tonight.

I always put "dance" in quotes because it's so simple - anyone can do it. Most of it is stationary, meaning we just move our hands, arms, and legs a lot.Remember, it's a comedy so the dance is supposed to be funny too.

We'll go over the whole script tonight so you get the idea and then we'll start moving our hands, arms, and legs! :)

Choreographed Dance Practice Update

The Young Men and Young Women have agreed to be a part of the dance for our ward film. They don't have mutual this Tuesday, so we are going to have our first dance practice at
7:00 PM (not 8:00) in the cultural hall at the church.

This will be so much fun! Thanks for your support. There will be some kind of snacks.

Also, I'm going to film the dance so anyone who can't make it to a practice, or just wants to practice on your own time can watch it over and over any time you want. It will be a small enough file size to email to you. Let me know if you want to see it.

Stake Road Show Film Festival

This year our stake is hosting a Film Festival instead of the traditional Road Show. Micah and I were asked to be in charge of the Grandview 1st Ward's film along with Greg and Julie Rhineer, the activities committee chair-people. What a fun project! We are really excited about our screenplay and the footage we have filmed already.

A lot of people have expressed interest in being a part of the film and we are ready for your help! We have 3 big scenes left to shoot that we need a LOT of people for. Ideally we could have the whole ward :)

Theater Evacuation Scene - We are working to secure an actual movie theater to film our ward watching a movie and having to evacuate because of a fire. It's definitely a comedy and there are lots of opportunities for humor in this scene. We need as many people as we can get this Saturday, March 14th to help fill and evacuate the theater. Micah really wants a bunch of kids to trample Dave Price. It only gets funnier from there...

Choreographed Dance and "Credit Parade" - We will have a total of three practices for our dance because it is that simple. You won't need to practice any more. We invite ALL AGES to join us for the next three Tuesday nights (March 10th, 17th and 24th) in the cultural hall at the church at 8:00 PM to learn the really simple (mostly stationary) "dance" that was a requirement for the film. The dance has nothing to do with the story. It's just a comical way to entertain during the "Credit Parade".

The "Credit Parade" will be a line of primary children, their families, and leaders walking intermittently across screen in front of the dancers during the "dance" carrying posters with the movie credits written on them. We thought this would be a fun way for the primary children and anyone who wants to be on screen but not have to act to be involoved. This will be filmed on Saturday, March 28th at Kiwanis Park.

Baseball Game Called Because of Rain - We need two full little league type baseball teams, coaches, and a CROWD to watch the game. The scene will be a heart wrenching community little league baseball game that has to be called because of rain. The bishopric will be playing the coaches and umpire but we still need a lot of kids for the teams and A LOT of people for the huge crowd that is there to watch the big game. This will also be filmed at Kiwanis Park on Saturday, March 28th.

There is one more small scene that we will need three to five boys, aged 12-14 to help out with. They don't have to say anything, just act like they are sitting around a campfire and then have to put out a really annoying camp fire that keeps lighting back up. If you know anyone interested, please let me know. We will also be filming this scene at Kiwanis Park on Saturday, March 28th.

Come learn the basics of sewing taught by Jennie LeFevre. The first class we will be sewing simple pillowcases. You can choose to buy some of Jennie's fabric for $3.50 or bring your own. To figure out how much fabric you need, just measure a pillow case you already have and add 4 inches to 2 sides. The width of the fabric you buy should be 45 inches.

72 Hour Kit Tip

I heard this tip from a digital scrapbooker the other day. She said that she has her photos stored online, backed up on a hard drive, and then she has them saved on two flash drives. (Thumb drive, jump drive, memory stick... it all means the same thing :)

She keeps one of the flash drives in her 72 hour kit and the other is in a lock box somewhere away from the house.

That is some serious photo protection! I thought I would pass it along.

Super Sale Alert!

Lisa Moore let me know about a great sale Albertsons has going on until Wednesday on C&H sugar. If you buy 4 (5 lb.) bags of sugar for $10, you get $3 off, making each bag only $1.75.

To compare that to a 25 lb. bag, it would be $8.75! That is cheap for sugar these days. You do have to buy them in multiples of 4 to get the deal, and you have to have their Preferred savings card.

ALSO, after you buy all that sugar....

If anyone is looking for a pediatric dentist, Lisa's dentist gave her three coupons to give to people for a free appointment. She said to just let her know if anyone wants one. She said she really likes him and his staff and they only work with children and they do a great job.

I don't know what my deal is. I type faster than I think, I guess. I need to clarify that the Quiet Book Class will meet for the first time exactly one month from today, March 25th. Not tonight as I posted earlier, and not March 17th as was announced in Relief Society.

This is a picture of my first car... well, this is how they make it 21 years after the model I drove in high school :) It was my dad's old commuter car. My junior year in high school my sister and I got to share it and then it was all mine my senior year. The air conditioning was broken so I was always driving windows down style, but the heater worked great. I just tried to remember that all summer - in the winter the heater would work great! It finally died the summer after I graduated from high school with almost 400,000 miles on it! Also, when my brother was 14 he would sneak out in the wee hours of the morning in my car to do his paper route. He taught himself how to drive stick in the foggy Central California mornings.

The Book Club meets the first Thursday of each month to have an enlightening and entertaining discussion. I have still never been to a meeting, but I've heard over and over that they're really fun. They will be meeting next on Thursday, March 5th at Marilyn Miles' home at 7:00 PM. They will be discussing "Eat Cake".

I found this picture online so if someone from the book club let me know if you're reading "Eat Cake" by an author other than Jeanne Ray, that would be great. I've been known to make mistakes :)

Our Relief Society presidency will be emailing announcements about the Lindon Cannery to let us all know about opportunities to volunteer for shifts there. Shifts are 2.5 hours and at the end of your shift you have the opportunity to buy the product directly from the cannery. Tomato soup is scheduled for the rest of this week.

I noticed at the end of the last email that there was mention of an Overage sale on May 1st. I've left a message with the cannery asking about prices for the overage sale and I'll post it here when I find out. Buying from the Lindon Cannery is always a deal, just imagine even more of a deal!

Scrapbook Paper Sale

I just heard that there is a Scrapbook Paper sale at the Alpine School District Surplus Store and the last day is tomorrow from 1:00 - 4:00 PM. I went last week and got a stack of 12"x12" paper and card stock an inch tall for $3. The also had stickers, cards and envelopes, markers, punch-out letters, and packages of designer paper for assorted prices. For example, I got 2 packages of cards and envelopes for $1. The markers were $2. The packages of designer paper were $1 each. Really great prices.

It's all Stampin' Up brand that you can check out here. The person who told me the sale had been extended said that there might be even more discounted prices because it is the last day.

1 pint rubbing alcohol
1 TBLS liquid detergent
4 TBLS ammonia
Add enough water to make a gallon
Add a little blue coloring if blue makes you feel cleaner :)

Happy Birthday Relief Society!

For our Enrichment night coming up on January 21st we are celebrating Relief Society's birthday. The true birthday isn't until March (I think) but we are partying early.

We are looking for one more person who likes the idea of making a birthday cake and decorating a table for 8 to help at the party. The cake and decorations can be any theme you wish. Meredith Harris has offered to be a resource and I've seen her teach the young women about cake decorating. She really knows what she's talking about and has a great cake book to look through.

There is something special about celebrating the birth of the Savior along with people all over the world.

It's probably very apparent from the lack of posting that I've been very busy this holiday season. Mostly the lack of posting comes from lack of knowing what's going on! I didn't realize it until just the other day, but I didn't get to attend our own ward at all in November! That's just about long enough to make you feel out of the loop. However I do have some Enrichment Committee insider information on some things to look forward to...

Keep your eyes out this Sunday for announcements about our super exciting Enrichment Activity coming up in January. It is going to be FUN!! (All caps intended.)
In 2009 there will be TWO new Enrichment groups announced!
Also in 2009 the Get Moving Group will be resurrected! If you're interested in getting moving, please let me know how you like to move and the times/days that would work best for you to move. Email me. Camille. bootstothemoon@gmail.com
Also in 2009 we will begin work on the Stake Road Show Film Festival. If you're thinking, hey wasn't that supposed to be in November? Yes. It was, but it was quickly rescheduled because it just wasn't enough time to make a short film. The new date has yet to be announced, but they were thinking Spring so we think January will be a good month to get to work :)

Sorry it's been a while since there have been any posts. I've been in and out of town and I guess the combination of business and feeling out of touch with our Relief Society has led to less posting. Hopefully these recipes will make up for it.

Rachel Hiatt has shared her crock pot oatmeal and granola recipes. She gave me the original recipes that inspired her versions and then her version as well. She said that she never really fully follows a recipe and it must be working because she's gotten so many requests for the recipes. Here they are.

“Set for Life” Granola
4 c. old-fashioned oats
2 c. rolled wheat
1 c. oat or wheat bran
1 c. whole wheat flour
½ c. dry milk
½ ts. salt
½ to 1 c. sunflower seeds
1 to 2 c. slivered almonds
12 oz. can frozen apple juice concentrate, thawed
1 ts. vanilla
2 c. dried fruit, chopped

Mix dry ingredients in a bowl. Mix apple juice concentrate and vanilla. Pour over dry ingredients and stir until well mixed. Spread mixture on large baking sheet in a thin layer. Bake in a 200* oven until golden and almost dry, about 1 ½ to 2 hours. For chunky granola, don’t stir while baking. Break into bite size pieces and add dried fruit. Store in an airtight container.

Rachel’s Granola
6 c. oats or 6-grain cereal or combination of both
1 c. flour or bran
½ c. dry milk
½ ts. salt
12 oz. can frozen apple-raspberry juice concentrate, thawed
1 tb. vanilla
Mix dry ingredients in a bowl. Mix apple juice concentrate and vanilla. Pour over dry ingredients and stir until well mixed. Spread mixture on large baking sheet in a thin layer. Bake in a 200* oven until golden and almost dry, about 1 ½ to 2 hours. Generally it isn’t chunky, even if you don’t stir. I am thinking about adding ½ c. honey to the juice to see if that would make it chunky.
I add dried or fresh fruit to my bowl of granola, then I can choose what kind of fruit I want.

Overnight Oatmeal (Alton Brown)
1 c. steel cut oats
1 c. dried cranberries
1 c. dried figs
4 c. water
½ c. half and half
Combine ingredients in crockpot and set to low heat. Let cook for 8-9 hours.

Rachel’s Crockpot Oatmeal
½ c. steel cut oats or 9-grain cereal
1 ½ c. water
3 tbs. milk
2 tbs. cream or half and half
Combine ingredients in crockpot and set to low heat. Let cook for 7-8 hours. You can increase or decrease the liquids to make it thicker or thinner as you like. I confess, I just pour in a little milk and then add a little less in cream. Adding dried fruit means adding more liquid as well. Usually there is a film on the surface that I stir in as soon as I get up and it’s mostly gone by the time we eat.

I love finding things like this that are refreshingly cute and truly simple. It looks like they used those licorice strings for the band of the ear muffs and lifesavers for the muff of the ear muffs, but I don't see why you couldn't do the whole thing out of frosting if that's all you had at home.

This is my mom's rolled sugar cookie recipe. Recently I found the exact same recipe somewhere online titled "The last sugar cookie dough recipe you will ever need." I agree completely.

In bowl add:
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cups butter

Cream ingredients well. Add:
5 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt

Chill for at least an hour before rolling. Roll at least a 1/4 of an inch thick. Do not brown cookies.

Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

Two fantastic recipes. One offers an idea of what to do with leftover oatmeal and the other sounds like it would make divine French toast!

Oatmeal Cake
Serves 16

1 1/4 cups water, boiling
1 cup oats, instant
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar, granulated
3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cups flour, stirred and measured
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1.2 tsp nutmeg
6 TBLS butter
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup evaporated milk
3/4 cup pecans, chopped
1 cup coconut flakes

Pour boiling water over rolled oats; set aside for 20 minutes. (Or 1 1/2 cups leftover oatmeal may be used.) In large mixing bowl, cream together butter or margarine and sugars; add eggs and vanilla and blend well. Stir in oatmeal, then mixed dry ingredients. Bake in greased 9x13 inch pan at 350 degrees F. for 40 to 45 minutes or until done.

Combine butter (or margarine), brown sugar, evaporated milk, chopped nuts, and coconut. Mix well. Spread over cake; broil until frosting bubbles and is slightly brown, taking care not to burn.

Raisin-Oatmeal Bread
Serves 16
Serving Size: 1 slice
Makes: 1 loaf, 16 slices
Use this bread for unforgettable slices of warm, golden French toast, kissed with cinnamon and sweet, plump raisins.

1 1/2 cups water
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 cup quick-cooking oats
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 TBL shortening
1 package active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (1o5-115 degrees)
1/2 cup raisins
3 to 3 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 egg white, slightly beaten
2 TBLS quick cooking oats

1. heat water and salt to boiling in 3-quart saucepan. Stir in 1 1/2 coups oats, the brown sugar and shortening; cool to lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water. Stir into oat mixture. Stir in raisins. Mix in flour with spoon (dough will be sticky). Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Place in greased bowl; turn greased side up. Cover; let rise in warm place (85 degrees) until double, about 1 1/2 hours. (If kitchen is cool, place dough on a rack over a bowl of hot water and cover completely with a towel.)

2. Grease loag pan, 9x5x3 inches. Punch down dough; shape into rounded loag. Place in pan. Brush top with egg white; sprinkle with 2 TBL oats. Cover; let rise in warm place until double, about 1 hour.

3. Heat oven to 375. Bake until dark brown, 40-45 minutes. Rmeove from pan; cool on wire rack.

1 slice: Calories 155 (calories from fat 20); Fat 2g (Saturated 0g); Cholesterol 0mg; Sodium 230 mg; Carbohydrates 32 g (Dietary Fiber 2 g); Protein 4g.

Craft-a-thon Surplus Give-away!

I'm really excited about today's post. I have two of these shoulder bags that I made for displays for the Craft-a-thon sign up process that I'm just not using. I'd love to give this one away. The outside is kind of an Asian print with all different kinds of paper umbrellas. The lining is green with colored polka dots. It's reversible. The strap on this one is really long so you could either tie it to a length you like or cut and resew to a length you like or just have a really long strap.

Here are as many recipes as I can type while Nigel is still asleep from the Emergency Preparedness Oats class last night.

No Bake Cookies
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter/margarine
2-4 TBLS cocoa (depending on how chocolatey you want them to be)
1/2 cup water

Bring to a full rolling boil. Watch closely, stirring constantly so that the sugar is dissoled but isn't burning.

Add 3 cups oats directly after taking above mixture off the heat, add 1 tsp vanilla. Mix well. If desired, add 1/2 cup peanut butter, 1.2 cup coconut or nuts. Drop by spoon onto waxed paper and let cool.

Instant Oatmeal Packets
3/4 cups solled oats
1 1/2 cups quick oats
1/2 cup powdered milk
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp salt (scant)
1/2 tsp cinnamon

Blend dry rolled oats in a blender, pulsing until oats are powdery (not flour). In a mixing bowl, combine powdery oats and the remaining ingredients.

Put 1.2 up instant oatmeal into zipper lock bags. For variety you can add toppings to each bag (raisins, other dried fruits etc.) Makes 6 instant packets.

To use, combine 1/2 cup instant oatmeal and 2/3 cup water in microwavable bowl. Microwave for approximately 2 minutes. (A little less for an 1100 watt microwave, and more or fewer watts) Stir.

Cranberry Almond Granola
4 cups old fashioned oats
2/3 cup honey
4 TBLS butter or margarine, melted
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup natural almonds, cjopped
1 cup sweetened flake coconut (optional)
1.2 cup wheat germ
1 cup dried cranberries

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place oatns in 2- 15 1/2 by 10 1/2 jelly roll pans. Place pans on 2 oven racks, and bake oats 18 to 20 minutes or until lightly toasted, stirring oats and rotating pans between upper and lower racks halfway through baking.

In large bowl, stir noney, butter, vanilla and salt. Stir in oats, almonds, coconut (if using), and wheat germ to coat.

Spray same pans with nonstick spreay. Spread oat mixture evenly in pans; bake 12 to 14 minutes or until golden-brown, stirring once and rotating pans between racks halfway through baking. Cool granila in pans on wire racks about 15 minutes.

Transfer granola to large bowl. stirn in fruit. Store at room temperature in teightly sealed container up to 2 weeks. (To keep crisp, store oat mixture separately from fruit; mix before serving).

Makes 10 cups.

Breakfast Take Alongs
2/3 cup butter or margaring
2/3 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
3/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 cup oats (quick or old Fasioned, uncooked)
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1/2 cup wheat germ
6 crispy coooked bacon slices, crumbled

Beat together butter, sugar, egg and vanilla uuntil well blended. Add combined flour, soda and slat; miz well. Stir in oats, cheese wheat germ and bacon. Derop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto greases cookie sheet; bake at 350 degrees 12 to 14 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Cool 1 minute on cookes sheet; remove to wire cooling rack. Store in loosely covered container in regergerator or at room temperature.

Makes about 3 dozen cookies.

Oatmeal Cake
Serves 16

Great news for mothers...

A list has been compiled of the girls in our ward who are interested in babysitting. They've all agreed that a reasonable amount to charge is $2-3 per hour per child. Of course every family is different. In some families it makes it easier to have more children around, in others it makes it less easy (hopefully a nice way to say harder :) Ultimately they agreed that anything is better than nothing.

Let me know if you want to see that list. I've got names and phone numbers. Also, if you want any kind of reference just let me or Tiffany Bishop, or any member of the Young Women Board know. You'll be impressed with these young women for sure.

Absentee Ballots

The 56th consecutive quadrennial United States presidential election will be held on November 4, 2008. That's only about 6 weeks away! If you are considering being out of town on November 4th you can still vote using an absentee ballot.

Don't worry. I'm not going to get all political on this blog. Here I'm completely Swiss. I'll never promote or debate here. (But, if you come over for dinner that's a different story :)

You can print the absentee ballot application here. This application is for any resident of Utah to request the absentee ballot to be mailed to the address of your choice. I'm assuming the ballot will have very specific instructions on what to do after you've filled it out.

Also, if you need to register to vote in the state of Utah you can get information on registration here and actually print the registration form here.

Relief Society Lesson - Beyond the Veil: Life in the Eternities

Amy Ossofsky taught a wonderful lesson today about life after our life on earth. It came from chapter 18 of Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith. You can read it here or on page 217 of your manual.

One remarkable part of Amy's lesson is when she asked us to share a time when we were blessed as a result of pondering the scriptures. Joseph Smith received revelation about life in the eternities as a result of pondering the words of the Bible as he was working to translate it. The same principle can apply to us today.

I was really impressed by what Janet Dustin shared. She had really wanted to serve a mission when she was 21 and counseled with Heavenly Father seriously to make an appropriate decision. She decided that it was Heavenly Father's will that she serve a mission and was excited to share the news with her parents, expecting their excitement and support.

She said that her parents weren't happy about the decision she had made and didn't want her to go on a mission, enough to counsel her not to go. She was confused by her parents' response and the witness she had received personally. She turned to prayer and the scriptures. The answer came from reflection on words from the Bible suggested to her by a friend. The answer was to love and serve God even more than her parents.

Wow! I think that was such a courageous thing to do. She said that she still struggles to deal with going against her parents' wishes, but ultimately what matters is that she did Heavenly Father's will.

Really that's what counts. Even if it means doing something hard, or becoming unpopular, or potentially having to pay for your mission on your own because your parents don't want you to go, or whatever. Thanks for sharing Janet.

There have been a few inquiries as to how to sign up to make specific crafts at our huge Craft-a-thon coming up on October 15th.

I love being a "Western Family".

I really do. When I was growing up in Merced, CA the local brand was Sunny Select and I always hated it when my mom would buy that brand because I thought it was embarrassing. (How lame was I?)

Today I love nothing more than buying 3 Western Family packets of ranch dressing seasoning for $0.88 and good old Western Family sour cream for $0.99 and then mixing one of the packets with the sour cream to eat with produce sold by our very friendly produce guys at Macey's down the road. (They always give Nigel a banana to eat while we shop.)

The point being that Lisa Moore just let me know about the amazing sale going on at Macey's and Albertson's.

beans of all kinds (ie. black, pinto, kidney, etc.) for .49.

Hearing about all of this hurricane Ike business and watching all of the stores close gives new perspective to emergency preparedness. It seems like it's not a matter of if something will happen, but when. Today is better than tomorrow for preparing, and these sales will help make it a little more affordable.

Wheat Class Review by Micah Anderson

I wasn't able to go to the wheat class that the Emergency Preparedness Class put on this past Tuesday, but Micah was at the church for meetings and got to sample the deliciousness. Days later he is still raving about the home made graham crackers.

I'm giving his review because I haven't asked any of the women who were there. So please note that had I asked someone else it would be a lot more thorough, but his brief comments while home for lunch today will have to do.

The wheat sausage was amazing. I liked knowing that it was wheat.

There were wheat and peanut butter bars.

There was delicious wheat bread with this awesome blackberry jam. You should have seen Dennis elbowing his way through the table saying, I love this stuff! This is my favorite!

Oh man! You should have had these little wheat crackers... homemade graham crackers!

The large square scrapbook paper is on sale at XPDEX just up Columbia Lane. It is normally priced $0.59 a sheet, but it's 50% off while supplies last. I saw some Christmas prints but mostly generic prints.

Playgroup with live animals!

This sounds like so much fun to me - watching little kids watch live animals. I love the different reactions you get from them. Caroline Shillig has organized a live animal show at the Monte L. Bean museum at BYU for the play group. Here are the details from Caroline. (Read it to yourself in her cute accent and it's a lot more fun :)

A while ago I heard this local talk radio show about the Victory Garden and I just can't stop thinking about it. I live in a condo and have for 5 years. I look forward to the day that I can have my own little land to cultivate.

Anyway, if you want to hear about local gardening and get some good resources for starting, maintaining or expanding your garden, just take a listen to good old Doug Fabrezio from Radio West here.

It's just under an hour long - good for a listen while folding laundry, walking, or whatever it is you do while listening to something.

I really enjoyed Afton's lesson today. The Plan of Happiness and how my little life fits in to it has really been on my mind lately.

You like films with a strong message, but don't want to be hit over the head. TAKE is a modern telling of Saul on the road to Damascus, but told in a subtle yet compelling way. It is not your typical LDS-made film because it explores strong universal and moral themes meant to reach a wider audience and appeal to more thoughtful movie-goers. There's a strong message about the eroding effects of resentment and revenge and the liberating effects of forgiveness. The director puts it best in this video:

However, against the will and intentions of the filmmakers, in the US, the MPAA has given it an R rating for "some violence with intense emotional impact." Do massages make anyone else's hands freezing cold for hours?

I just got back from Provo College and I feel like sharing. I was there helping a student with a midterm. (Lucky for me she is a massage therapy student.) I had to wait a bit for my massage and so I was staring at their mission statement on their wall for a good while. After all that staring the only part I remember is student-centered and market-driven.

I was really impressed by the words and then even more impressed with the people I watched there. I guess mostly because I watched teachers and administrators truly caring about their students' work and lives. It all seemed so sincere.

And then there was my masseuse. Not only did she give me a great long massage, but I feel like a better person emotionally and spiritually after our chat. This girl is only 18 years old and just found out that she is pregnant. Her boyfriend made her choose between him and the baby and she chose her baby! She said that she chose to keep the baby because she already feels like a mother and loves her baby too much. She talked about how she is grateful for her supportive family and the chance she has to be in school to be working towards a stable career.

I was totally inspired by her optimism and desire to do good. And that was just her story. Every one of those students has their own story! Thank you Provo College for enriching my life and the lives of all those students.

It's the recipe for the sweet pork at Cafe Rio. It takes 24 hours to cook (depending on your crock pot) and anything that takes that long is melt in your mouth delicious, right?

As I was following the directions I was wondering why it never gave instruction to shred the meat. Then I poked a wooden spoon on the top of the roast and it fell completely apart! This is some seriously tender pork!

Cafe Rio Sweet Pulled Pork

3 1/2- 4 lbs pork roast

(for our dinner we used a 2 1/2 lb. pork tenderloin from Costco it was plenty)

2 Tbsp. brown sugar

1- 1 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper

2 tsp. cumin

1 tsp. salt

1 (8 oz) can Coke

1 c. chicken stock

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 small onion, chopped

1 c. brown sugar

Night before:

Mix together 2 Tbsp. brown sugar, cayenne pepper, cumin, & salt. Rub this mixture on roast. Put in crock pot on low & cook all night. (Depending on your crock pot, you may want tot cook for 4 hrs. instead of 8, others may work better with the overnight rule.)

Next morning:

Add Coke, chicken stock, garlic & onion. Continue cooking all day on low. (Or just 4 more hours if your crock runs hotter than others. You can use a meat thermometer to be sure it is done.)

Hour before serving:

Add the last cup of brown sugar.

Stake conference was wonderful yesterday! Anybody else? I *loved* all the talks. Nigel had about had it after the first one, but we made it all the way through Elder Packer's talk. I'm so sad that we didn't get to here President Uchtdorf's talk!

In case anyone else missed any of the talks here's the break down (according to my easily distracted brain, so I'll need some help with some things):

A man spoke first whose name I did not catch, but he's a member of the 70 right? Great talk about the differences we all have and working towards "the ideal" while embracing those differences.

Ann Monson Dibb spoke next about the counterfeit vs. the real deal. It's easy to be fooled these days about what's important and what's not and even what is truth and what's not. I think I'll always think twice when I buy bread as opposed to taking the 5 hours she talked about needing to make delicious butter glazed homemade rolls for the Young Women in her ward. She took the time because she loved the girls and wanted them to know the difference between real bread and the counterfeit processed stuff that we eat all the time. An anology I think I'll never forget.

Then Elder Packer spoke about a lot of different things. I don't know if Nigel was distracting me or what, but I didn't hear the end of his talk that I'm assuming tied all the stories together. I do remember that Provo is named after a French-Canadian tracker whose last name was Provost and he outlived the 3 year life expectancy of trackers in the West because he was so good.

And that's when Nigel insisted that we take him home and put him to bed. We were hoping that the multi stake conference would have been broadcast on some local TV station, or radio station, or the internet or something but we couldn't find it. So, if you would care to add more to this summary just leave us a comment for further enlightenment.
